چکیده

Low impact development (LID) is generally regarded as a more sustainable solution for urban stormwater management than conventional urban drainage systems. However, its effects on urban flooding at a scale of urban drainage systems have not been fully understood particularly when different rainfall characteristics are considered. In this paper, using an urbanizing catchment in China as a case study, the effects of three LID techniques (swale, permeable pavement and green roof) on urban flooding are analyzed and compared with the conventional drainage system design. A range of storm events with different rainfall amounts, durations and locations of peak intensity are considered for holistic assessment of the LID techniques. The effects are measured by the total flood volume reduction during a storm event compared to the conventional drainage system design. The results obtained indicate that all three LID scenarios are more effective in flood reduction during heavier and shorter storm events. Their performance, however, varies significantly according to the location of peak intensity. That is, swales perform best during a storm event with an early peak, permeable pavements perform best with a middle peak, and green roofs perform best with a late peak, respectively. The trends of flood reduction can be explained using a newly proposed water balance method, i.e., by comparing the effective storage depth of the LID designs with the accumulative rainfall amounts at the beginning and end of flooding in the conventional drainage system. This paper provides an insight into the performance of LID designs under different rainfall characteristics, which is essential for effective urban flood management.

Analyzing the effects of urban development on flooding in the cities (Case study: Birjand City)

It is increasingly recognized that the land-use change, especially urbanization has influenced hydrological attributes intensely. But in most urban designs, flood prediction is considered through type of land use (residential, industrial, and so on) and density. However, experiences show that this method has not been very successful. As a result, the present study aims to investigate and explor...

The Effect of Mashhad City Development on Its Flooding During 1941- 2016

Impervious surfaces in urban zones, during rainfall, increase the runoff speed and reduce the opportunity for evapotranspiration. This will increase maximum discharge and reduce the time of concentration of flood in urban storm. In this research, the effect of the development of Mashhad on the urban flood has been studied. The EPA SWMM model was used for this study. The studies showed that the ...

Preparation of flood sensitivity map using SVM model and the impact of green city development on the increase of flood flow peak and the resulting damage

Aims: The expansion of cities, especially cities that have seen abnormal growth due to economic, social, and political changes, has caused many problems. It has been found that land-use change, especially urbanization, has greatly affected hydrological characteristics. But in most urban designs, flood forecasting is considered through the type of land use (residential, industrial, etc.) and den...

Impact of urbanization on rainfall-runoff processes: case study in the Liangshui River Basin in Beijing, China

China is undergoing rapid urbanization during the past decades. For example, the proportion of urban population in Beijing has increased from 57.6 % in 1980 to 86.3 % in 2013. Rapid urbanization has an adverse impact on the urban rainfall-runoff processes, which may result in the increase of urban flood risk. In the present study, the major purpose is to investigate the impact of land use/cover...

Impact of rainfall data resolution in time and space on the urban flooding evaluation.

Climate change and modification of the urban environment increase the frequency and the negative effects of flooding, increasing the interest of researchers and practitioners in this topic. Usually, flood frequency analysis in urban areas is indirectly carried out by adopting advanced hydraulic models to simulate long historical rainfall series or design storms. However, their results are affec...
